Why learn Malay language?

New learners to Malay language are always confused whether it is the same as Indonesian language. However if you listen closely there are some differences of meaning and also intonation.

You could differentiate the languages by listening to the video below:



It's a short clip from the infamous Indonesian Drama - Bawang Putih Bawang Merah with Malay language subtitle. The reason why we need the subtitle is because there are words in Indonesian language which is totally different from Malay Language.

According to Wikipedia: Malay is a group of languages closely related to each other to the point of mutual intelligibility but that linguists consider to be separate languages

In Malaysia, Malay language is called as Bahasa Malaysia. It is a compulsory subject for Malaysian to learn since elementary school. Eventhough Malaysia is multi-racial, the use of Malay language between races has been considered essential in the development of unity in Malaysia.

Why learn Malay Language?

Eventhough I think that learning any language is difficult but Malay Language is pretty easy primarily because of this reasons:
1. Malay language use latin characters (rumi) - A-Z
2. It is almost like japanese language, for example:

Saya means I or me. 
'Saya' can be separated into two; sa + ya

In Japanese, watashi also means I or me
'Watashi' can be separated into three ; wa + ta + shi
